To drop the new motor in:
Just need to rewire the MAP sensor and bolt the flexplate on and she’ll be going in.
I finished pulling the trans and my old motor out last night so I could start swapping the remaining parts:
Then I pulled the old motor apart to swap needed parts and went a little further to see if I could find the suspect lifter via loose rocker:
No dice on finding the issue, but I was happy to see the motor still looks like new inside.

The work you do is quite impressive. I do wonder what you think of the David Tracy’s challenge with a 2nd gen Chrysler minivan: https://jalopnik.com/heres-everything-wrong-with-the-600-diesel-manual-chry-1844765405

I was just reading that and gave him some direction on the mounts and fixing the headliner.
Then I told him when he ultimately gives up on it to ship it to me so I can have a nice daily driver ;)

I saw you did a cold air intake back in July, but do you do any other mods or upgrades when you go this deep on your vans?

Good work, L_V. *lights cigar*
I love it when a plan comes together.

How much do you think he will need to spend to get it to pass the TUV inspection? My guess is $2600.

The fuel issue is the biggest hurdle I can see. Everything else should amount to well under $500 if he does it all himself.

This engine, no.
Generally speaking, I do port work and such if I have to tear in this far.

In teresting.

I’m actually pretty serious about snagging it from him if he does give up and try to ship it here.

That’s interesting for a host of other reasons. What would make this one interesting to you? Just the manual and diesel? Couldn’t those be swapped into one that is already here?

Forbidden fruit type of thing.
Honestly, I think it would make a great daily driver. The diesel/manual combo would likely be insanely efficient, I wish we would have had that option in the states, it’s a sensible driveline for a family cruiser.
I’m sure I could swap one, but sourcing the parts and converting everything over would likely be more than it’s worth.
What’s interesting about the cost to fix it up?

I just think it is going to cost more than anticipated due to the fact that it is an old American van in Germany.

The parts themselves are cheap. I would personally have someone order them over here, then have them shipped over.
How much they actually cost there, I have no idea. I mean a set of Gabriel shocks here are less then $20/pair, can’t imagine shipping is that expensive.

Same reason my ‘98 Accord V6 got a port&polish job when I was checking on the fuel injectors under the manifold

It’s not when you fill an entire shipping container. It gets somewhat expensive when you’re shipping individual parts.

Wonder where the cutoff is that it starts getting expensive?
I shipped a pair of taillights to a guy in England for his Voyager, IIRC it was $25 for shipping.

Yea, that sounds about right . $20-$30 is what I’ve seen for smaller stuff and $50+ once you start getting larger and heavier.

So you’re installing a 3.8L into a van that wouldn’t have ever had one? Is the engine bone stock, or are you tweaking it?
![]() 08/24/2020 at 07:05 |
|
Not only is it going into a van that would have never had one, but it’s also from a completely different generation.
This is a 98 3.8L, it’s the 180hp/240ft-lb motor. I just did a stock rebuild on it, no intentions of tweaking it further. It’s a 30hp/65ft-lb bump from my current 3.3L.

Should be noticeable. Did you rebuild it yourself?
![]() 08/24/2020 at 09:57 |

Yes sir. All new bearings, pistons, rings, cam, lifters.
![]() 08/24/2020 at 11:31 |

Did you take the block to a machine shop?
![]() 08/24/2020 at 12:14 |
|
I had a shop install the cam bearings as it was cheaper than buying the tool to do it myself, otherwise everything was in great shape and perfectly within spec, so no machining was needed.
